A Place of Execution on the Danube Levee

Локација: Околина Новог Сада – дунавски насип

On the 23rd of April, on the so-called Šangaj (War Island) area in the Kovilj Marsh, Hungarian occupation forces shot several dozen citizens that were previously arrested as part of staged actions carried out in the evening between the 13th and 14th of April. The dead bodies were then thrown into the river while the remains of some of the victims were buried in a mass grave dug up at the levee. The majority of the dead bodies of the executed civilians were taken by their families two weeks after they were shot. Even though we do not have precise data about the number of people that were shot, according to some eyewitness testimonies of the event, around a hundred and fifty people were executed on this location.
